GENERAL OVERVIEW

The 2017 program ran from Monday, June 12 until Friday, August 11. For the first 1-2 weeks, there were two hours of introductory lectures each morning. During this time, daily homework problems were assigned to accompany the lectures. There were also be professional development seminars on Sage (to help students with both their homework and research project) and \(\LaTeX\). After this introductory period, students were divided into two groups of four each and will choose research problems.

The rest of the summer was be devoted to work on these research problems. Each morning began with group progress reports. Weekly professional development seminars continued. These included both guest lectures as well as discussions on employment opportunities, advice on presenting and networking, and research ethics.

In the final two weeks, the student groups began to formalize their results in a paper format, and they prepared an oral presentation. This time overlapped with the Mock AMS Conference at the University of Georgia (see below), where the students were active participants.

MOCK AMS CONFERENCE

Participants in the REU had the opportunity to take part in the University of Georgia’s Mock AMS Conference. This is a multi-day conference in late-July/early-August consisting of 20 minute research talks by each of the current mathematics graduate students. In attending this conference, our participants were exposed to current research in mathematics beyond that discussed at the REU, and got a sense of the conference atmosphere. Last, UGA graduate students created a panel for REU participants on applying to graduate programs and “the real scoop” on the first 1-2 years of a graduate program.

SOCIAL ACTIVITIES/MANDATORY FUN
There should be some play to accompany all this work! Throughout the summer there were weekly social events. These included hikes to Pilot Mountain, attendance in annual Winston-Salem Fourth of July events, and game/movie nights. There were opportunities for students to plan social events, and–of course–there an end-of-summer celebration.
